History on the veil
Roman brides wore veils, known as 'flammeum', which were dyed a golden shade with saffron to represent the flame of Vesta, the domestic goddess and giver of life. The veil was to protect he bride from evil spirits and was a symbol of her betrothal for life.
The introduction of the veil into Europe seems to have come from the Middle East, brought back by knights fro the crusades. In arranged marriages it was used to hide the bride's face from the groom, who would not yet have seen her. Once they were married, the groom was allowed to unveil his new wife's face, at which point i was too late for any second thoughts. This maybe the reasoning behind the Jewish tradition of the groom checking to see if the bride is the girl of his choosing before placing the veil over her head.
If you are wearing a veil that will cover your face during the ceremony, it is important to get the attachment right; practice with the headpiece before the big day. Otherwise have fun with it - it may be the only time in your life you wear one.
